MY MOM

Good afternoon, sorry for not getting on here sooner. Mom, did great with her surgery. Only problem, she had a morphine pump and they told her she could press it every ten minutes if needed. Then around lunch time they asked her on a scale of 1-10 how bad is the pain, she said about an 8 and going strong. So the RN went out and came back with some sort of a pill. From there on out, she didn’t know what was going on most of the time.

She would sleep and then all at once wake up and say something that made no sense, so I went out to the nurses station to find out if something was wrong or perhaps she was getting too much pain killer. The nurse said she suspected too much pain killer.

Then around 4:45, she woke up, threw back the covers and said, I have to get up, Sonny will be here at 5, I jumped up and went over to the bed, and said, Mom, you can’t get up, she said why, I said because Sonny has already gone home, and she said why, I said you’ve already had your surgery and you’re in your room. She looked around and said, well if that doesn’t take the cake.

She was this way on and off till we left, and I asked the nurse, isn’t there something you can do in case she tries to get up again. They assured me, they could put a beeper on her, and since she was right next to the nurse’s station and they could see into her room, she should be fine.

Well apparently NOT, because I found out later when I called to remind the new shift about her being confused and trying to get up, she had tried again. And they did, now have a beeper on her, but apparently she pulled her IV’s out in the process and it sounds like (after talking to Mom this afternoon) she also pulled the drain off the little pouch that was collecting the blood draining from her knee. She said she fell, the nurse DID NOT say this, so I am not sure if she did, since she was still in a state of confusion at the time. She thought it was 7:45 and she had overslept and she said she told them she couldn’t understand why my brother didn’t knock at the door to wake her. Because now she was going to be late getting to the hospital

She was really confused, but thank goodness today she sounds her normal self again. After sitting in that uncomfortable chair off and on for almost 12 hours, and since my old arthritis was already acting up, when I got up this morning, I was in so much pain, I had to call my family doctor. Was able to get in and got a steroid shot and also a shot of something called Toradol, and a prescription for some pain medication. Believe me right at the moment it is feeling so much better. Still hurts some but not like it did. I guess it’s also the sciatic nerve along with old Arthur.

I will post her address once she is at the rehab here at Brookhaven. She’ll be leaving the hospital either Thursday or Friday and she’ll be in rehab for about three weeks. So I’ll post that address once I get it. Thanks to all that have asked about her and how she’s doing and for all the prayers. She said today when the doctor checked the knee and changed the bandage, they told her she’s doing good for the first day. A therapist has already been in and manually moved her leg, and when we were talking she said some kind of machine was hooked up and making her leg move. So I think once this is all over and healed she’s going to be very happy she had it done. Again, thanks everyone.

Patty .... I'm happy your mother is through her surgery and THAT is behind her. I know from experience that the drugs they give you after major surgery (in my case heart bypass) can really play havoc with your lucidity! Strange things go on in drug clouded minds. Glad to hear that her clouds are clearing away.

Now ... YOU take care of YOURself!! Don't over do it as you won't be any help to her if you do!

Hugs,
Mickey (Mama Mouse)
