Quotes that make you think

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism. - Erma Bombeck

Those who won our independence believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the secret of liberty. - Louis D. Brandeis

We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls.- Robert J. McCracken

Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.- Albert Camus

It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you. - Dick Cheney

Liberty is the breath of life to nations. - George Bernard Shaw

America is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral fact - the first community in which men set out in principle to institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human equality.- Adlai Stevenson

Where liberty dwells, there is my country.- Benjamin Franklin

We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.- William Faulkner

Better to starve free than to be a fat slave.- Aesop

I have always been among those who believed that the greatest freedom of speech was the greatest safety, because if a man is a fool, the best thing to do is to encourage him to advertise the fact by speaking.- Woodrow Wilson

I like your first quote from the late Erma Bombeck who was from Dayton Ohio and went on to become a celebrity nationwide. I understand that she is buried in a cemetary near Dayton.

Hi Patty,

Great quotes. I liked Erma Bombeck's quote, FDR's, and Faulkners the best.

It was a sad 4th of July here, because I went to the funeral of a friend's husband, who passed away unexpectedly.

Tomorrow, we'll go to the cabin on the river for a cookout and maybe a boat ride. But today was very sad. I hope you and your family had a wonderful 4th of July.

Good night.

Renie

Some great quotes here! I believe I like Dick Cheney's the best, though.
