This was the year we got married

Comments made in the year 1955!

That's only 53 years ago!

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.'

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2, 000.00 will only buy a used one.'

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?'

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.'

I waited tables and got .60 cents an hour, made more in tips then I did working on a Sunday

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.'

Sometimes when my friends and I were able to borrow a family car to drive to Greenville, we had to scrape together enough for the gas, plus be able to get a snack. Greenville had this circle in the center of town, and all the kids would cruise around and around that stupid circle, but hey, everyone was doing it. LOL

'Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.'

Believe it or not, I even had one, then went from the Duck Tail cut to a Poodle Perm

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.'

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .'

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.'

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.'

Look at all the applicances they have now and what all they can do. We had a refrigerator, mixer and a toaster and thought we had it made.

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.'

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.'

'Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more, those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.'

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.'

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.'

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.'

'There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.'

'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

I guess like the old cliche says: "those were the days" I guess all the towns had a square or circle where we drove round and round.

I remember once, my girlfriend and I traded places, she sit next to my boyfriend and I sit next to hers. That made the heads turn when we drove around the block;)) Remember we never sit next to the door, we always had to sit close to our guy...

I enjoyed the stroll down memory lane...Have a nice week-end.

I'm only 45, but I can remember in high school, we would put $1 worth of gas in the car and go cruising the strip all night! I still have a box that photos of me were sent to my parents in. They came from California to Indiana. 8 cents to mail the box! That was about 1965ish.

I remember all of this stuff. And I remember how much shoes cost for the kids.

I remember gas in the US costing less than a dollar... (sigh).

Ah, yes, the Nifty Fifties! I remember all of those as well. Thanks for the memories, Patty!

Good night!

Those were great. My how times have changed. I wasn't born until '59, but those statements weren't too terribly different in the mid 60's. Ahh... I miss the old days! Cheers!

I had this email one time....really quite interesting! Seems strange that things have gone so wild since then! Gas 29 cents a gallon!!! Can you imagine! And I can remember those days...that's scary!!! Means I am getting old! LOL And $35 a night for a hospital bed!!! What's it going to be like in another 53 years? Glad I won't be here then! LOL
